A new poll reveals the best present to get her may hinge on what type of mom she is overall. A survey of adults asked people how they show their appreciation toward the women in their lives who are mothers and found that three in five believe every day should be Mother’s Day. 86 percent of respondents say these women are the most hardworking people they know, but 69 percent agree that moms don’t get enough credit for all that they do. Seven in 10 Americans also call their mom their best friend and 63 percent think their mom is a superhero who can take on any challenge and resolve it with grace. The average person would spend about $300 on a gift for their special day to show these moms their appreciation, but two in three agree that you don’t have to break the bank to show mom love. Conducted on behalf of Angara by OnePoll, the survey found that those who always pamper their moms with presents prioritize shopping every year to find the perfect gift (84%). That may be because a similar percentage love seeing their mom’s face light up after opening a present (82%). Finding the right gift can be tricky, but 64 percent are confident they know what their moms would enjoy as presents. Still, three-quarters of respondents make sure they’re on the right track by asking them what they want (76%). Sometimes, moms get so excited that three in four survey-takers admit they have to hide the presents so the surprise isn’t ruined. The top presents people prefer getting their moms are personalized items like photo frames or blankets (37%), edible gifts like chocolate or fruit arrangements (36%), or household niceties like a new TV or wine glasses (36%). To avoid gifting mishaps from their partners and kids, 74 percent of moms don’t mind letting them know what they want in advance. Moms also weighed in on the kind of gifts they like, with most admitting they expect a gift from their significant other and/or kids (82%). They also revealed how their personalities might influence what they hope to get. “Foodie moms” (who love to eat, snack, and try new foods) would unsurprisingly be happiest with edible gifts (29%) but would also love a getaway or gift card/certificate (27%). In contrast, “soccer moms” (who are sporty and take their kids to sporting events and practices) are not shy about letting their families know what they want in advance (96%). They also prefer homemade (31%) or household gifts (29%). Meanwhile, “wine moms” (who love an occasional glass after a long day) also have a preference for heartfelt homemade gifts (35%) or ones they can munch on (27%). Some of the best Mother’s Day presents moms recall receiving are having the house cleaned and dinner made, a handwritten poem, and a “beautiful yellow vase that contains porcelain roses.” On the other hand, 62 percent of moms admit that they’ve pretended to like a gift in the past, such as a plant, mud flaps for their car, or dish towels. 88 percent of moms say no matter what their kids and/or significant other get them for Mother’s Day, they always value the thought behind the gift more than the gift itself. When it comes to safe choices, a fifth of moms also agree that jewelry is always an option they appreciate (22%). Entertainment In History On this day in music, May 6, 1978, the soundtrack to Saturday Night Fever began an astonishing 18-week straight run at the top of the UK album chart. Across the Atlantic, it spent an unbroken 24-week run atop the Billboard 200 and was well on its way to being certified 16x Platinum by the RIAA. Primarily featuring music by the Bee Gees, the soundtrack spawned a multitude of hit singles, including “Stayin’ Alive,” “How Deep Is Your Love,” and “Night Fever” (all US No.1s). The film and album (which became one of the highest-selling soundtracks of all time) both played a major role in the disco phenomenon, while in 2014, the Library of Congress added Saturday Night Fever to its National Recording Registry. In 2020, Kraftwerk co-founder and electronic music pioneer, Florian Schneider, died at age 73. The German band rose to fame with their 1974 album, Autobahn, and would go on to have a major influence on musicians in the 1970s and 1980s, including David Bowie. Schneider left the group in 2008. In 1965, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards began working on the opening guitar riffs to “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” – now considered to be one of the greatest hooks of all time. Primarily composed in a hotel room in Clearwater, Florida, hours after Richards purchased a Gibson fuzz box, the song was recorded days later at Chicago’s storied Chess Studios. Released in June 1965, “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” gave the Rolling Stones their first No.1 hit in the US. In 1995, Oasis scored their first UK No.1 with “Some Might Say.” The lead single off their second album, (What’s the Story) Morning Glory?, it was the Manchester band’s last song to feature all five original members of the band, as drummer Tony McCarroll left shortly after its release. Oasis’ first performance of the song, on Top of the Pops, was also their final with McCarroll (drummer Alan White would soon step in). Inspired by Grant Lee Buffalo’s “Fuzzy,” it also reached the Top Ten in several countries across Europe. In 1973, Paul Simon embarked on his first solo tour, following the disbandment of Simon & Garfunkel and the release of his third album, There Goes Rhymin’ Simon. A study examining the lifespan and usage of the average American couch (among other home furnishings) unearthed how many life moments happen on those cushions. The survey, conducted by OnePoll found America’s typical couch has also been napped on 36 times, played host to 32 catch-ups with family and friends and nursed us through 21 sick days. While 70 percent of Americans rate their couch as comfortable overall, more than one-fifth said their couch is faded and a similar number said it’s now totally outdated. Sadly, less than half (44 percent) of those polled were proud of the way their home looks, with one in ten going so far as to say they are embarrassed Having Dogs is Great for Your Owners Have Made Friends While On ‘Walkies’Social Life: Almost Half of Owners Have Made Friends While On ‘Walkies’ Dogs may be man’s best friend, but a new survey of dog owners shows that they’re also good for helping their owners make new friends too. The survey says that almost half of dog owners have made friends while on their “walkies.” In fact, people say they have met an average of four new people though their pets while out for walks or at puppy training classes. The results found that 54% of dog owners believe having their pet has boosted their confidence and made it easier for them to talk to strangers. One sixth of participants say they know someone who has met their partners through owning a dog. On average, owners spend more than 7-and-a-half hours a week outside walking their pup, while one in 10 even spend up to 10 hours. But more than one-third admitted they prefer going on a walk with a human companion and, on average, spend one hour a week arranging outings with fellow dog walkers. Lists Parents have revealed the top 30 things which should be on a child’s ‘must do’ list before they start school A poll of pre-school parents revealed children should also have fed the ducks, had a birthday party and met some friendly farm animals before starting primary school. Jumping on a bouncy castle, taking a trip to a toy shop and dancing with parents also ranked highly on the list of things to do in their formative years. 89 per cent of parents believe it is important to regularly introduce new things to their children to help with their development. The research, commissioned by childcare provider Busy Bees, found for 72 per cent of parents, experiencing new things is important for building their little ones' confidence. Seven in 10 believe it helps pre-schoolers learn new things while 60 per cent say it allows children to explore different emotions. Almost two-thirds of parents (63 per cent) believe their child has missed out on many of these key experiences due to the pandemic, with 78 per cent agreeing their development has been held back because of this. Social interaction (53 per cent), social skills (51 per cent) and speech (30 per cent) were voted the top things that have been affected. In a separate survey conducted by the nursery, polling parents, it emerged more than a third (36 per cent) are concerned the pandemic has made it harder for their child to feel ready for school. Four in 10 members of the Busy Bees Parent Panel said they had spoken to their child’s nursery key worker about the impact that the pandemic has had on their child. More than half (52 per cent) plan on making up for this over the summer and have already started ticking things off their list, according to the OnePoll study - with eight in 10 parents planning new and exciting experiences for their child. It also emerged 89 per cent ‘feel good as a parent’ when seeing their child enjoy new things with the average mum and dad aiming to give their child four new experiences each month. The main source of inspiration for what to do with their little ones is friends and family (59 per cent), while 43 per cent usually turn to Instagram and 27 per cent look to their nurseries or childcare settings. A further 39 per cent will turn to various websites and 37 per cent scroll through other people’s Facebook posts or ask the child themselves. However, not being able to live life as normal during the pandemic did have its perks for parents as 61 per cent enjoyed spending more time together as a family. And almost half of the parents surveyed (49 per cent) say they plan to continue making space for more family time and shared activities in the future. Scrape their knees Social Media Facebook ‘Likes’ Don’t Make People Happier, Study Finds A new preliminary study finds that looking to Facebook for a mental boost by accumulating “likes” from friends doesn’t actually make people feel good or have any positive impact on one’s self-esteem. The researchers found that when people received the likes they so desperately searched for, they didn’t actually feel any better or view themselves in any more positive of a light. The authors also note that those who specifically log onto social media sites soliciting likes from others — whether simply asking a friend to like a photo or actually buying likes online — “were more likely to have low self-esteem and be less trusting.” Stats This is the most frustrating thing to do during the work day, according to new research A survey of office workers found that small jobs can tally up, with nearly half saying that sending emails is the most frustrating task they have to do during their workday. From following up, sending reminders, responding and drafting new emails – 48% of those surveyed said email is the most irritating task in their day-to-day duties. When asked specifically what would be needed for increased job performance, 46% of respondents said their job performance would improve if they had opportunities to improve their existing skills on the job as well as opportunities to learn new skills (44%). Some of the most hair-pulling moments during their workdays were communication-based – from hosting or sitting in on meetings (37%) as well as speaking to managers and team members (37%). Conducted by OnePoll on behalf of UiPath, the survey found other frustrating tasks included creating new products or services (40%) and helping their customers (37%). Nearly two in five (38%) of those polled further identified inputting data and creating datasets as well as scheduling calls and meetings. 66% agree the majority of their workday is eaten up by tasks that could be automated. Three in five (59%) of those surveyed identified the amount of “paperwork” they have to do throughout the day as their most mundane task. Nearly half also pointed to outdated software (48%) and repetitiveness (47%) as their top gripes about their mundane work. The average respondent has taken on four new work tasks outside of their job description due to a coworker quitting. In fact, 77% of those polled who’ve lost coworkers don’t even know what their own job responsibilities are because they’ve had to take on so many additional tasks. All of these frustrations are coming to fruition too – 60% of respondents said they’re interested in finding a new job in the six months when they took the survey. Two in five said the lack of autonomy and opportunity to work on things they’re interested in is the top reason they’re looking to quit their current job. 74% agreed they’d be able to focus on more creative and fulfilling tasks at work with the help of automation to clear up their more mundane tasks. Additionally, 77% agree automation will help their organization retain and attract new talent. Forty-eight percent of those polled also said some automation in their day-to-day would improve their overall work/life balance. Average person expects to stream this many different movies or TV shows yearly The average person expects to stream over 290 different movies or TV shows this year, new research suggests. Regardless of what they’ll be watching, people think they’ll stream 437 hours of content in the year ahead, equivalent to over 18 full days. A recent survey of adults found that people are reevaluating what streaming services they pay for, with 57% planning to cut some of their paid streaming subscriptions and the average person dropping three out of about five from their arsenal. Those who have paid TV and video services don’t anticipate using or plan to bid adieu to subscription video-on-demand services, such as Netflix and Amazon Prime (75%), as well as satellite TV (61%), pay-per-view services like Apple iTunes (52%) and cable TV (48%). Conducted by Tubi, the survey found that seven in 10 cited changes to their financial situation as a reason to reevaluate their streaming service spending. Aside from budget respondents cited other factors that would make them pull the plug on a streaming service, including a limited selection of titles (49%), lack of a user-friendly interface (34%) and poor customer service (33%). Forty-four percent said they’d stick with an unsatisfying streaming service for only a week before canceling it. What would keep people loyal to a service? Affordability (45%), a wide selection of content (44%) and a user-friendly interface that makes it easy to discover movies and shows (43%). An attestation to the idiom “variety is the spice of life,” 36% of those polled would drop a service that didn’t have a large enough library of content to choose from. In their hunt for a streaming service, people usually search for one that carries a specific series or movie (59%) or that is the most affordable (57%), and more than three-fourths have tried a streaming service because it carried a particular movie they were looking for. When it comes time to choose what to stream, 59% look for titles tied to holidays like Halloween or Valentine’s Day. More than half also browse a service’s home page and decide based on their mood. Among Gen Z (born in 2000 and later), 40% say they’ve done this, while 42% of Millennials (born between 1982 and 1999) and 34% of Gen Xers (1965-1981) have. Fewer (18%) of Baby Boomers (1946 -1964) confess to having done this. People who live in cities (38%) are more likely than residents of suburbs (27%), towns (25%), or rural areas (20%) to say they’ve hit the buttons to shut elevator doors before someone can board. While the largest share of Americans (43%) believe that hitting the buttons to close the doors will make the doors close sooner, 26% believe hitting the button to close the door usually does nothing and 11% say it delays the closing of the doors. E.T. go home? 1 in 8 Americans terrified of allegedly beloved character If you’re scared of E.T. then rest assured, you’re not alone. One in eight Americans finds E.T. scary, according to a new survey. Many Americans have long harbored a fear they don’t all feel comfortable sharing; that E.T., the ‘cute’ extraterrestrial gracing our screens in 1982, is actually quite fear-inducing. 13% finds the far-from-home alien to be ‘very’ scary a further 36% share the sentiment but only deem the being ‘somewhat’ scary. The fear of E.T. prevalence emerged in a survey exploring all things aliens by Talker Research on behalf of Wealth of Geeks. The survey saw a braver four in 10 (41%) respondents say they feel no fear towards Steven Spielberg’s creation, while some (11%) had not seen the movie and could not say either way. Men are nearly twice as likely to find E.T. scary (17%) compared to women (9%). The fear of E.T. findings emerged in Wealth of Geeks’ wider aliens survey, which found one in three people (37%) think aliens are living among us in disguise. However, many remain unconvinced. Forty-one percent of those polled disagree with the notion that extraterrestrial life may be walking and talking among us, with the remainder unsure (22%). HOW SCARY DO AMERICANS FIND E.T.? Could your interior design skills actually save your physical and mental health? A new study explains that just by pointing your bed and other furniture in the right direction, your well-being could greatly improve! A team from Maharishi International University looked at 40 years of research into the practice of Maharishi Vastu architecture (MVA). Whether you call it “Zen” or “flow,” they found that where certain objects are inside a building — as well as the direction they face — can impact everything from stress, to sleep, to mental health. According to the study, if your head is facing to the east or south when you sleep, you’re more likely to have a lower heart rate, blood pressure, and cholesterol levels. People with homes that have an entrance facing south display poorer mental health and have more financial problems Whether you work in an office or at home, it might also be time to turn your desk around! Researchers found that facing east while you work leads to greater brain coherence and helps workers complete tasks faster. Did You Know? Toilet Paper Fun Facts About four billion people don't use toilet paper. About 70% - 75 % of the world’s population does not use toilet paper. A lot of people would rather not spend money of fancy paper to wipe their behinds. Two-ply toilet paper consists of two layers of 10 thickness paper, one ply is made of a 13 thickness paper, and so, two-ply is not necessarily twice the thickness. When comparing one-ply and two-ply on average one-ply toilet paper lasts twice as long. One-ply will also tend to break down faster in a septic system. In an average household, the average roll of toilet paper lasts approximately five days. Consumers use approximately 8 - 9 sheets of paper per toilet use. We use an average of 57 sheets of toilet paper a day! The average roll weighs 227 grams (measurements: 4.5 inches by 4.5 inches per sheet) Seven percent of Americans steal rolls of toilet paper in hotels or motels. If you hang your toilet paper so you can pull it from the bottom, you're deemed to be more intelligent than someone who hangs their toilet paper and pulls it from the top. It takes about 384 trees to make the toilet paper that one man uses within his lifetime. The average person uses 100 rolls of toilet paper per year (over 20,000 sheets). The daily production of toilet paper is about 83,048,116 rolls per day.
